Discussing the establishment of a European Union Security Council and joint military coalition amidst declining transatlantic commitments, with special emphasis on preserving sovereignty and territorial integrity within Europe.

AGENDA

European union

The European Union has long navigated a delicate balance between unity and sovereignty, fostering cooperation while preserving the independence of its member states. Today, that balance faces an unprecedented test. As transatlantic commitments show signs of strain, Europe is increasingly confronted with the need to reassess its security architecture and its reliance on external guarantees. At DSMUN 2026, this committee engages with a defining question: should the European Union evolve into a more assertive security actor through the creation of a European Union Security Council and a joint military coalition? Such a transformation promises greater strategic autonomy, yet raises deep concerns about centralization, political consensus, and the erosion of national control over defence. The preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity remains at the core of this debate, even as calls for deeper integration grow louder. Delegates must navigate competing priorities, collective security versus national interest, unity versus independence, and deterrence versus escalation. In a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape, the challenge is clear: can Europe secure itself without compromising the very principles upon which the Union was built?
