Negotiating Accession, Sovereignty, and State Survival in the Integration of Princely India, 1947

AGENDA

Chamber of princes
(1947)

As the British withdrew from the subcontinent in 1947, the future of over 560 princely states became uncertain. These states, once protected under British rule through subsidiary alliances, must now decide their path forward. They can choose to join India or Pakistan, or attempt to remain independent in a rapidly changing and unstable environment. With the end of British authority, rulers are left to make decisions without external support or guarantees. The Chamber of Princes becomes a key platform where these rulers discuss their options and respond to growing pressure. Each state must consider factors such as geography, economic strength, public opinion, and security. Internal unrest, political uncertainty, and the threat of conflict make these decisions even more difficult. At DSMUN 2026, this committee will function as a crisis simulation where situations evolve quickly. Delegates will face challenges such as territorial disputes, diplomatic pressure, and possible military action. Every decision will carry immediate consequences, not just for individual states, but for the future of the entire subcontinent and its long-term stability and unity.
