Navigating the Authorities of the Commercial Determinants of Health

AGENDA

World health organisation

The World Health Organisation stands at the intersection of public health and global governance, confronting a challenge that extends beyond traditional healthcare systems. In today’s world, health outcomes are increasingly shaped not only by policy and medicine, but by powerful commercial forces, ranging from the food and beverage industry to pharmaceuticals, technology, and global marketing networks. These “commercial determinants of health” influence lifestyles, access, and risk factors on a global scale. While industry can drive innovation and expand access, it can also contribute to rising burdens of non-communicable diseases, unequal healthcare access, and conflicts of interest in policymaking. The growing influence of corporate actors raises critical questions about regulation, accountability, and the extent to which profit-driven entities should shape public health outcomes. Here at DSMUN 2026, delegates will dive deep into the complex relationship between economic interests and health priorities. The committee must balance collaboration with regulation to ensure that innovation is not stifled while safeguarding populations from harm. As global health challenges evolve, one question becomes central: can international frameworks effectively govern commercial influence, or will public health remain vulnerable to the forces of the market?
