The Nanjing Crisis Commission
Agenda
Deliberating on the Treaty of Nanjing and its effect on the geopolitical balance of South Asia
The Nanjing Crisis Commission provides a chance to walk in the shoes of key historical figures, walking through one of history's most tumultuous chapters in Sino-British relations. Delegates immerse themselves in events leading up to the first Opium war, as the era of 'The Unequal Treaty' unfolds, signaling the beginning of the century of humiliation for the Chinese. Conflicts are born out of contentious trades, expanding empires, and crumbling balances of power. Delegates have the power to shape different worlds, guide decision-making, and lead armies. Against a background of trade deficits, waning sovereignty, and imperial ambition. Altering the course of the British and inaugurating the ascendance of western power in Asia. The British, with industrial power and an appetite for domination, forced opium into Qing China, triggering resistance and ultimately reprisal. As the Qing dynasty struggles with corruption and declining sovereignty. As a representative on this committee, your task reaches far beyond traditional diplomacy. YOU'RE the author of history's next chapter, and your choices determine the destiny for a corrupt Qing dynasty or a greedy British one. The future is yours now.
