Special Political and Decolonization committee

Agenda

Reviewing the sovereignty of Wrangel Islands and delineating maritime boundaries in the Barents Sea region

The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) is one of the UN General Assembly's key committees mandated to uphold the United Nations' fundamental values of equality. Being under the responsibilities of the SPECPOL committee, the agenda "Addressing sovereign claims over the Wrangel Islands and delineating maritime boundaries near the Barents Sea" has taken a position of fundamental importance. Russia's territorial disputes with several other countries, including the United States, Canada, and Norway, over sovereignty claims in the Arctic region's Wrangel Islands and Barents Sea have escalated in recent years, as rapidly melting Arctic ice opens up new shipping routes and access to natural resources such as offshore oil and gas reserves. Potential solutions will require negotiated treaties based on international laws such as UNCLOS, amidst conflicting economic and security interests. Delegates in the SPECPOL committee face one of the most consequential territorial disputes, requiring exceptional international foresight to craft effective resolutions. As stewards of political stability, the SPECPOL committee must identify diplomatic solutions that balance sovereignty claims, environmental conservation, and strategic interests in the Arctic disputes.
