Addressing the crisis of Transnational Drug Cartels with special emphasis on global prescription drugs misuse
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is a fundamental component within the UN system, mandated to combat the threats of organised crime, drug trafficking, terrorism and corruption. The UNODC operates across borders to create a safe environment, upholding justice and safeguarding the rule of law to foster global stability and promote cooperative solutions. At this edition of DSMUN, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will address the crisis of transnational drug cartels with a special focus on the global prescription drug crisis. The trafficking of prescription drugs plays a significant role in the worldwide addiction and overdose crisis, with countries like the United States facing a public health emergency that has led to millions of deaths. Transnational drug cartels have expanded their reach, moving beyond just illegal substances, which affects both developed and developing nations, overwhelming healthcare systems, and fueling corruption. Disrupting these drug cartels requires stricter regulations, international cooperation and efficient public health strategies. The Executive Board aspires to provide delegates with an intellectually stimulating and productive experience as they collaborate to develop potential solutions to these urgent matters.
